WASHINGTON, DC – Today Maria Rose Belding, a senior at American University and an Iowa native, was named one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes of 2018 for her work tackling food waste and hunger simultaneously with MEANS Database. MEANS Database is a nonprofit website that allows grocery stores, restaurants, and businesses to easily donate excess food to food pantries and other nearby nonprofits feeding the hungry. When businesses have food to donate, they post to the website and nearby emergency feeding systems are notified instantly.

Beginning today, voters can select the ‘CNN Hero of the Year’ by voting for the Top 10 CNN Hero who inspires them the most. The CNN Hero of the Year’s nonprofit will receive $100,000 in funding. Supporters can vote daily at CNNHeroes.com by logging in via email or Facebook. Viewers can vote up to 10x a day, per method, every day through Tuesday, December 4th at 11:59pm PT.

The Peabody and Emmy Award-winning CNN Heroes campaign celebrates individuals who are making extraordinary contributions to help improve the lives of others. Anderson Cooper will be joined again this year by Kelly Ripa as co-host of the 12th Annual CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute. The awards show, which celebrates all Top 10 honorees, will air Sunday, December 9th at 8pm ET live from the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

Since its creation in 2015 MEANS has rescued over 2 million pounds of food nationwide. They have users in 49 states and DC, who represent more than 4,000 partner agencies.
